Project Description
The site is located in Xin Yuan Xi Li District of Peking, China, which is an old residential area, placed in the city centre. It consists of old-fashion apartments constructed in the 1980s when there had rapid economic development. The general atmosphere of it is monotonous because of lacking amusement facilities. Furthermore, insufficient activity places for a massive ageing population is a significant problem for this kind of districts. Gradually, there will be a generational-shift, however, the original condition will not satisfy the old and new residents.
To solve this problem, we decided to design a multifunctional outdoor theatre. Our project is based on the idea of “Watch each other”. It supported by the importance of meeting people because communication and observation will create a vigorous society. Instead of an ordinary theatre format (fixed stage and stand), we suggested free positioning of player and audience. This flexibility not only allows performance variation but also will be used as a daily activity places, which will integrate cultural diversity.
